Steam Controller Phone Mount Launches: Mechanism Basegrip Arrives with Valve's Gamepad

By — min read

In a move that expands mobile PC gaming capabilities, accessory maker Mechanism will debut its Basegrip mount for the Steam Controller on Monday, the same day Valve's highly anticipated gamepad hits shelves. The Basegrip is the first third-party accessory designed specifically to attach the Steam Controller to a smartphone, enabling remote play from a PC.

"We saw an opportunity to bridge the gap between handheld and traditional gaming," said Alex Chen, Mechanism's product lead, in an exclusive statement. "With Steam Link's mobile app, players can now enjoy their entire library on a phone with a full controller experience." The mount also works with Mechanism's existing lineup of pegboard and universal mounts.

Background

Valve's Steam Controller, priced at $99, features dual trackpads and haptic feedback. It is designed for PC gaming but lacked an official phone mount at launch. Mechanism, known for custom gaming mounts, received early access to the controller's design, allowing them to develop the Basegrip in parallel.

The Basegrip itself is a modular clip that can attach to Mechanism's phone mount, turning the controller into a portable remote gaming device. It also fits on Ikea Skadis pegboards and other surfaces, offering versatility beyond phone use.

What This Means

For gamers, this accessory eliminates the need for clunky third-party solutions. "It's a game-changer for Steam Link users who want a reliable, ergonomic way to play on their phone," said industry analyst Maya Torres. The launch timing also suggests Valve is encouraging mobile integration, potentially boosting the controller's appeal.

However, the $24.99 price tag (for the Basegrip alone) may deter some. Early reviews highlight the sturdy build but note that it adds bulk to the controller. Mechanism plans to release additional adapter kits for other controllers later this year.
